about

EYES GOUGED BY THE THUMBS OF SATAN

I first witnessed the scintillatinly cruel and brutal Couch experience during the summer of 1993 withing the dimly-lit catacoms of the now-defunct Milk of Burgundy in Chicago. To my dismay, that encounter began "in progress." As I approached the entrance, an intense ejaculation of vacuum cleaner noise sprayed out towards me. I maneuvered through the inert throng of gaping zombies towards the gaunt, black suited men who were perpretrating this fantastic din. They appeared to be systematically or, perhaps, ritualistically pulverising their musical instruments into useless piles of broken junk. Strings of unrecognizable words and torrrents of choked syllables blurted forth from their souls.

The singer known as Marlon Magas incessantly strangled the microphone stand between fits of howling, guitar raking and frenzied physical spasms. In a spontaneous outpouring of brazen sexual excitement, he lunged forward and grabbed a woman by the wrist. She simultaneously fainted, as a result of obvious sensory overload. The crowd murmured anxiously as Magas skillfully guided the unconcious lass to the floor, before returning to the fracas so ably maintained by the severe gentleman to his right--the dreaded Mr. Velocity Hopkins. Hopkins appeared to be the mortal manifestation of pure, seething hatred in action: a vehement opponent of logic and a quixotic messenger of random violence. Legs akimbo, eyes bulged, teeth bared. Velocity ground his guitar strings with the most blatant disregard. The resulting tone could only be described as a death wail.

Jeff, the drummer, seemed to be somewhat mentally retarded. He was obviously a mere dupe, helplessly entrapped withint the diabolical musical scheme of the other two. Tension continued to mount between the audience and the perfomrers as the sheer force of the sound escalated. Marlon Magas leaped into the crowd to smite a pea-brained antagonist. The brief skirmish was concluded by a hailstorm of punches from the massive, bony fists of Mr. Velocity Hopkins. As soon as Couch began their act, it seemed to end. Everyone in the room was unsettled and shocked by what they had seen. To replicate the chilling atmosphere of that explosive chaotic demonstration would be impossible.

This collection of recordings serves as a perfunctory overview of the bands finest studio moments to date. From the tense minimalism of "Chinese Mechanic" and the lurching repitition of "Murmur in Cuba" to the sickeningly coy "Sexy River" and the volcanically disruptive "Green and Red Look Alike", Couch has begun the construction of an astounding legacy that will prove to be matched by few in this era of pompous irony and shallow kitsch/nostalgia.

Business suits as battle armor...skin scorched dry by horn-rimmed death rays...fuck you...send money...hail Satan.
